What Time Is Best for Photos in Maui?

February 2nd, 2026

The Timing of Your Photos Matters More Than the Location

Another question I get all the time:

“What time is best for photos?”

Short answer:
Sunset wins almost every time.

But here’s the full breakdown so you know exactly what to expect.

Sunset Sessions (Best Overall)

This is what I recommend for most clients.

Why:

Soft, warm light

Less harsh shadows

That golden Maui glow everyone wants

Best for:

Couples

Engagements

Families

Elopements

This is when Maui really looks like Maui.

Sunrise Sessions (Underrated Option)

Sunrise is a great option if:

You want fewer people around

You’re okay waking up early

You prefer a softer, cooler tone

It’s quieter and more peaceful, especially on popular beaches.

Midday Sessions (Usually Not Ideal)

I’ll be honest here.

Midday light is harsh, bright, and creates strong shadows.

It can still work, but it’s not going to give you that soft, cinematic look most people want.

My Recommendation

If your schedule allows it, go with sunset.

If you want privacy and don’t mind early mornings, sunrise is a great backup.

Either way, I help guide timing so you get the best possible light for your session.
