One of the first questions I get from couples and families visiting Maui is:
“What beach should we pick?”
And honestly, this decision can completely change how your photos turn out.
Lighting, crowds, wind, and even sand color all play a role.
Here are the beaches I actually recommend based on real experience shooting sessions across Maui.
Ironwoods Beach
This is one of my go-to spots for couples.
It has dramatic cliffs, beautiful golden light at sunset, and a more cinematic feel compared to flatter beaches.
Great for:
Couples sessions
Engagement photos
Elopements
DT Fleming Beach
This is a solid option for families.
It’s easier to access, more open, and works well for kids running around while still getting clean, beautiful shots.
Great for:
Family photos
Larger groups
Ulua Beach
One of the most versatile beaches on Maui.
You get a mix of sand, rocks, and calm water which makes it great for both couples and families.
Palauea Beach (White Rock Beach)
This is a favorite for a more private feel.
Less crowded, clean scenery, and really nice sunset light.
South Maluaka Beach
More open and peaceful.
Great for relaxed sessions without a lot of distractions.
Keawakapu Beach
Long stretch of sand and consistent lighting.
Works really well for families and walking shots.
Poli Poli State Park
Completely different vibe from the beach.
Tall trees, cooler temperatures, and a more forest-like setting.
Perfect if you want something unique and less “tropical beach.”
Most people pick a beach based on what they saw online.
But what actually matters is:
Where you’re staying
Time of day
The type of session you want
