A Candid Maui Photoshoot to Remember: One Big Family, One Magical Island

As a Maui photographer specializing in family photography, there’s nothing more fulfilling than capturing the real, unfiltered love of a family finally reunited. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful 16-person group—four siblings, their spouses, six adorable kids, and two doting grandparents, lovingly known as Lolo and Lola—during their first vacation together on the island of Maui.

This multi-generational family photoshoot was more than just a session. It was a celebration of connection, roots, laughter, and sandy toes.

 

 

Capturing the Heart of a Family: From California and Illinois to the Shores of Maui

The family flew in from California and Illinois to make this once-in-a-lifetime trip happen. It was their first vacation as a complete family—with all kids, all partners, and even a new baby who hadn’t been born during their last session in California.

From the moment we met, their energy was joyful and laid-back, which is perfect for the candid beach photography I love to specialize in. As a Maui family photographer who leans into real moments over stiff poses, this session was a dream.

 

The Beach, the Breeze, and the Beauty of Childhood

The kids—ages 12, 7, 5, 3, 3, and 1—were full of personality and charm. The younger girls were all about the beach, swimming, Baby Shark, and Bluey, while the older kids handled the camera like pros.

The 1-year-old was a nonstop ball of energy, which meant lots of chasing and playing—exactly the kind of authentic, storytelling photography that I believe preserves the truth of childhood. No forced smiles. Just giggles, sandy hands, and the occasional runaway toddler.

 

Photographing Love in All Its Forms: Family, Parenthood, and Grandparent Joy

The “must-have” list for this shoot was heartfelt: separate family portraits for each sibling, all the grandkids with Lolo and Lola, and a timeless shot of the four siblings with their parents. These are the kinds of images that grow in value every year, especially when rooted in candid connection and natural Maui backdrops.

We avoided overly adventurous poses—no piggyback rides needed!—and focused on what felt true to this family: being together, being present, and celebrating their bond.
